“AH, LUCY, HERE you are,” Rajiv says, jumping up, as she opens the door to the library. “I have missed you. You are well, yes?”

“Yes, thanks, Rajiv,” she says. “But listen, I’m on a mission. Kat says HAC’s talking about revoking my access to the restricted archives, so I need to get as much information out of there as I can before he shuts me down.”

“This is not a problem. Tell me again, in particular, what it is you are looking for.”

“Definitely letters, and anything that has to do with the Walled Garden or the Language of Flowers. Also, any scraps of Elizabeth’s poetry.”

“How many boxes are left?”

“I think I’m down to four.”

“I will take one then, and set aside anything I think may interest you. Here are some acid-free envelopes,” he adds. “If you find anything that needs further study, you may slip it in here. Simply note where you found it.”

“Thanks, Rajiv. That’s a huge help.”

Lucy plunges in, but the results are disappointing. It’s the usual muddle of notes, clippings, bills, and plant orders. Rajiv sets aside some letters for her but none are from Amanda. There’s one of special interest though:

Here’s a start of that scrummy Sedum cultivar I told you about last week.

The shade of burgundy is quite lovely, I think, though be warned: it does spread a bit. The boys were digging some out of the border yesterday so I nicked this bit to send you.
